The Bloat Diaries: When Your Stomach Throws a Surprise Party (and Everyone’s Invited)

diary of a hot mess

It started on a Tuesday, which already felt like a personal attack.

I woke up with what I thought was just your regular "over 40s puff". By 10am, my stomach looked like it had RSVP’d to a surprise party no one told me about. By 2pm, I was googling “how to discreetly unbutton my pants during a Teams meeting” while pretending to care quarterly budgets.

I’d done nothing wrong. No suspicious sushi, no bottomless brunch, not even a cheeky banana bread at 3am. And yet, my stomach had entered its toddler era, front and centre, unmissable, and demanding attention.

The Mystery of the Expanding Midsection

Here’s the thing about perimenopausal bloating: it’s unpredictable. One minute you’re fine, the next you’re rubbing your belly like you’ve just finished a pub schnitty challenge at Manly Wharf Bar.

It’s not just food. It’s hormones.

  • Oestrogen’s up
  • Progesterone’s down
  • Cortisol’s doing interpretive dance
  • Your gut slows down
  • Your digestion sulks
  • and suddenly even air feels like a food group

And look, before anyone says “just cut out bread”....please. Bread is the only reason most of us are still functioning members of society.

This isn’t about bread. It’s about biology.

Things I’ve Blamed My Bloat On (That Weren’t Actually the Problem)

  • That oat latte I got talked into by a barista named Hunter with a sleeve tattoo of a koi fish and a denim apron, eight dollars a pop and garnished with a sprig of rosemary for reasons unknown. I didn’t even want it, but my inner people-pleaser couldn’t say no, and I hated myself for it all the way to the office.

  • The “healthy” protein bar with words like clean and fuel on the wrapper, so I thought I was doing something good for my body. Ten minutes later, I was chewing through what felt like a chocolate-flavoured yoga mat and wondering why my jaw was getting such an intense workout. By the last bite, I’d convinced myself I could taste disappointment and expired whey...but my jawline was totally snatched!

  • I went through a brief but passionate kombucha phase, you know, the one where you convince yourself your gut is thriving, and then you take a swig too confidently, it fizzes up like a science experiment gone wrong, and I hiccupped my way through a Teams call. Fun times.

  • My jeans (again, rude)

  • The moon

Turns out, none of these were the real culprit. My body was just staging a protest. Hormones, stress, poor sleep, and an overwhelmed liver had joined forces like some kind of midlife Avengers, but with more puffiness and less Lycra.

When You Feel Like a Human Hot Air Balloon

If you’ve ever leaned over to tie your shoes and considered filing a complaint against your abdomen, I see you.

Bloating in perimenopause can make you feel swollen, sluggish, and one wrong move away from snapping your bra band. And of course, it always hits when you’ve got somewhere to be, dinner with friends, date night, or worse, anything that involves a waistline. I can't tell you how many evening events I've cancelled because of the bloats!

But the thing is, it’s not vanity. It’s discomfort. You don’t feel well. You feel like your body’s buffering.

How I Stopped Hosting the Daily Bloat Festival

Once I stopped playing dietary detective and started looking at the bigger picture, things shifted.

Here’s what helped me:

  1. I started eating meals that calm my hormones, not confuse them.
→ Protein at every meal, fewer “snackcident” moments involving Cheezels.
  2. I stopped skipping meals, especially lunch.
→ Apparently, your metabolism doesn’t reward you for skipping lunch. Who knew?
  3. I gave my liver a bit of love as well.
→ I cut alcohol, added more lemon water, herbal teas, greens and actual sleep.
  4. I walk it out
→ Sometimes it’s not what you eat, it’s that you haven’t moved since 8am. Even a walk around the office or a "fake trip to the loo" every hour will do wonders for your bloats!

None of this is fancy. It’s just consistent. And once your body feels supported, it stops inflating like a pool toy every afternoon.

What I Wish I’d Known Sooner

Bloating isn’t a punishment for eating carbs. It’s your body waving a flag saying, “Hey, something’s off.”

It might be stress, hormones, inflammation, or your gut crying out for a bit of TLC. Whatever it is, your job isn’t to fix it overnight. It’s to listen, support, and for the love of all things stretchy, stop comparing your current body to your 2012 holiday photos.

If you’re ready to stop feeling like a balloon animal at the mercy of your hormones, come join my 5 Day Kickstart. We’ll get your energy, digestion, and denim comfort levels back where they belong without straight celery juice or self-loathing.

FAQ

Q: Why do I suddenly bloat after eating literally anything?
Your digestion slows as oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate. That, combined with stress, can make even the smallest thing feel like sabotage.

Q: Does drinking more water really help?
Yes, your body can’t release fluid if it thinks it’s dehydrated. Hydration actually helps reduce your perimenopause bloating, especially if you add a pinch of sea salt and squeeze of lemon.

Q: Should I be cutting out foods?
Only if you’re genuinely intolerant. Otherwise, focus on adding the right fibre, protein, and whole foods instead of living in fear of toast.
